What Payroll does well
Pre-check gates
Every run goes through a 12-stage pipeline with explicit halt codes. Reconciliation balance is enforced — debits must equal credits.
Audit-grade trail
Append-only audit_trail.json per run records every stage, gate, and exception-rule evaluation. Re-derivable by sha256 + version pinning.
Conversational corrections
When a run halts, the specialist explains the cause in chat, proposes an override, and applies it after you confirm — all idempotent.
